Decks made for Hartlepool weather

Hartlepool gardens see more than their share of weather. Sea frets can hang around for days, the wind off the bay finds every gap, and through the winter a timber deck can stay damp for weeks. That's hard on cheap softwood, which soon turns green, slippery and soft.

We build decks to cope. That starts underneath, with a firm base, solid footings and a ventilated, well-drained frame, and carries on through to the boards, the fixings and the way the deck sits against the house.

Composite leads the way

For most Hartlepool homes, we recommend capped composite boards. They don't take on water, so they won't rot, warp or go green the way timber does; they stay grippy in the wet; and they need nothing more than a wash down now and then. For a busy family garden in Middle Warren or a seaside garden in Seaton Carew, that makes life easy. Read about composite decking.

If you'd love real wood, perhaps for a period house in West Park or a cottage in Hart, we also build in hardwood and softwood.

Questions people ask

Do I need planning permission for a deck in Hartlepool?

Usually not, provided no part of the deck is more than 30cm above the ground and, with any outbuildings, it covers no more than half the garden. Raised decks, listed buildings and conservation areas such as the Headland and parts of Seaton Carew may need more. Hartlepool Borough Council can confirm.

How long does a deck take to build?

A straightforward deck can be done in a few days; raised or multi-level decks with balustrades take longer. You'll get a timescale with your quote.
